Consultation Success Stories

Unrecognized Accounts on Credit Report

One customer contacted us because while applying for a mortgage loan, he discovered several unfamiliar accounts appearing on his credit reports. Kroll's Licensed Investigator made conference calls with the customer to the merchants to determine whether or not accounts existed within their holdings that were associated with him. They were told no accounts existed. The Investigator concluded that instead of an identity theft matter, this was a credit reporting error. The Investigator assisted the customer in obtaining credit reports for review. Finally, the Investigator worked with the customer to dispute inaccurate reporting with each credit bureau.

Collection Letter Received

Another customer received a collection notice regarding a debt he did not recognize as his own. Kroll's Licensed Investigator explained that receipt of such a letter is not confirmation of identity theft, but it warrants attention. The Investigator assisted in requesting validation of debt from the collector, and also helped the customer obtain and review credit reports. The man was told to call the Investigator again if debt validation showed that his personal identifiers were used to open the account in collection, so that identity theft restoration services could be provided.

Suspicious Telephone Calls

One customer's wife had recently received two telephone calls where the caller asked her to provide personal information relating to her husband. She did not provide any personal information, but they were both concerned about possible identity theft issues. Kroll's Licensed Investigator placed fraud alerts for both individuals, and assisted in helping them review their credit reports and monitor their bank and credit card statements closely.

Restoration Success Stories

New Account Fraud: Credit, Banking, and Utility Accounts/Pay Day Loans

This customer learned that her Social Security number, driver's license number and other personally identifiable information were used to obtain bank accounts, credit cards, and telephone and water utilities without her authorization. When Kroll's Licensed Investigator reviewed her consumer reports, she found a record of the thief also trying to obtain “pay day” loans. Those loan attempts and all other issues were resolved successfully. The customer was advised to obtain a new driver license number because her current driver's license number was associated with the unauthorized activity.

Check Fraud: Counterfeit Checks

Another customer received a letter from a check collection company, and verified they owned two unpaid checks associated with her driver's license number. The checks showed another person's name, written against a bank with which this customer didn't have an account. Kroll's Licensed Investigator contacted the collector and researched and completed all the documentation necessary to clear the customer's name from the bad checks. With the Investigator's help, the collector was able to determine the customer was not responsible for the checks.
